The Rugby Club is a 3500 square foot building in the UBC Point Grey Campus in Vancouver. The brief for this project was for a facility that included exterior seating for 300 viewers, change rooms, public washrooms and a spectator's lounge addressing multiple playing fields. The building will be located away from the main campus core behind the university's middle landscape of large single purpose buildings including ice rinks, tennis bubbles and gymnasia. The site is a challenging sliver of space constrained by existing below grade services to one side, rugby fields on the other and a 2 m cross slope. This programmatic light weight eschews a generic building on the landscape solution that would be out-scaled in this context. Instead it faces its lumbering neighbours by seizing what opportunities are at its disposal.
