PUBLIC was engaged to complete a major renewal and waterproofing of Simon Fraser University’s iconic Burnaby campus plaza originally designed by Arthur Erickson. This outdoor central spine is a processional route of great significance to the campus – a place of socializing, protest, and ceremony. Bridging a campus valley, the public space offers a covered passageway between two peaks and encourages interaction and the exchange of ideas. The plaza is the ‘urban hub’ of campus, plugging directly into the Bennett Library, the Bookstore, food services, and the Quad. The scope of the project offers an opportunity for a comprehensive aesthetic renewal and improvement while remaining true to SFU and Erickson’s original principles and intentions.
