Musqueam Indian Band and the Museum of Vancouver
2015 Canadian Historical Association Canadian History Prize
PUBLIC designed two exhibitions which opened simultaneously: at the Museum of Vancouver and the Musqueam Education and Resource Centre Gallery. c̓əsna'əm: The City Before the City is centred around historical belongings and contemporary culture of the Musqueam people. The 1,000 sf gallery in the Musqueam Education and Resource Centre will exhibit the work for one year, whereas the larger, space in the Museum of Vancouver comprises a permanent introduction to the history of Vancouver galleries. Since the project opened, MOV education staff report "We have always enjoyed touring groups through c̓əsnaʔəm and the feedback from teachers has been consistently positive over the years."
The exhibit was innovative for it’s close collaboration with the Musqueam People both in terms of content and design. The aim of the exhibit experience is not only about “righting history”, but expressing Musqueam’s story and thriving culture, including language, technology, art, governance and community.
