Musqueam Indian Band and the Museum of Vancouver
2015 Canadian Historical Association Canadian History Prize
Recently, two exhibitions opened simultaneously at the Museum of Vancouver and the Musqueam Education and Resource Centre Gallery. c̓əsna'əm: The City Before the City is centred around historical belongings and contemporary culture of the Musqueam people. PUBLIC was selected by the exhibition committee, comprised of Musqueam Indian Band and the Museum of Vancouver to work with the group to design both exhibitions. The 1,000 sf gallery in the Musqueam Education and Resource Centre will exhibit the work for one year, whereas the larger, space in the Museum of Vancouver comprises a permanent introduction to the history of Vancouver galleries.
The exhibit was innovative for it’s close collaboration with the Musqueam People both in terms of content and design. The aim of the exhibit experience is not only about “righting history”, but expressing Musqueam’s story and thriving culture, including language, technology, art, governance and community.
