Taking a cue from the adjacent woods, the new 350-bed c̓əsna'əm student residence building uses irregularly patterned and coloured brickwork to reference a stand of Douglas Fir. With extensive consultation and option development, PUBLIC’s design balances the immediate needs of building users with long-term site development for future housing and recreation phases. To meet the evolving needs of students, PUBLIC workshopped with a team of resident advisors for the design of washrooms and social spaces. Design outcomes included a preference for shared facilities that build stronger residence communities through greater socialization. The final design includes shared washrooms that balance the needs of gender fluid users with those of more traditional perspectives and universal accessibility of every residence room. Social spaces and kitchens operate at the individual, floor and house scales during the academic year while accommodating diverse conference program possibilities during the summer season.
