The UBC Buchanan Courtyards Renew project reinvents and revitalizes two public courtyards at the Buchanan Complex, home to the Faculty of Arts. The two spaces — one for gathering and celebration, the other for contemplation and relaxation — replace the forgotten and dilapidated 1960s courtyards, creating a dynamic new outdoor environment. The project incorporates a new performance pavilion, seating, native planting, and comprehensive stormwater harvesting and recycling. The concrete pavilion rests in a reflecting pool where quotations have been typeset in radiating rings to establish a visual expression of “The Arts” at UBC.
